Bob Jones III Chapel 12/07/2011

Bob Jones University today released the Findings of the Committee that Reviewed BJU’s Sexual Abuse Policy and Its Application. From what I can tell this is a good step (even if small) in the right direction for Bob Jones University. They seem to have recognized that things weren't being handled in the proper way in the past and that there was some confusion at the school. And it looks like they may put some mechanisms into place to both deal with future events and reconcile past ones. 

Greenville Online published an article today about BJU's decision to seek SACS accreditation (full disclosure I was interviewed for this article). The article is very good, it presents BJU's standard PR as well as featuring 3 graduates.

I wanted to point out a few things that came out of the article. First

Today Bob Jones University announced that they will seek SACS Accreditation (a regional accreditor). First lets break down the announcement and from there talk about what all this means.

In breaking news Chuck Phelps has resigned from the Board today.

At a regularly scheduled meeting of the Bob Jones University Board of Trustees, Dec. 2, 2011, Board Chairman, Dr. Bob Jones III, read a letter from Dr. Chuck Phelps in which Dr. Phelps voluntarily tendered his resignation from the Cooperating Board effective immediately. In submitting his resignation, Dr. Phelps expressed that he did not want anything to distract BJU from its mission.

A local paper in Greenville published the following article online today. The article is mostly summary of what did happen and what is currently happening. It also quotes an alum who supports the petition. Hopefully this is the first of many articles to come out regarding this topic.

In response to the official statement put out by Bob Jones University yesterday people have been calling Chuck Phelps directly to get his side of the story. When asked whether he owes Tina Anderson an apology here was his response:

Mr. Phelps adamantly maintained that he owned [sic, recte owed] Tina no apology whatsoever.
