accreditation

One of the issues I have with Bob Jones University's accreditation is its inflexibility and its inability to deviate. I've heard over and over, "this is what I plan to do so accreditation won't matter." Here are a few specific examples, "I don't ever plan to work in the public school, so that list doesn't matter." or "I plan to  work in the ministry for the rest of my life." This is all fine and good.

Thank you to Jocelyn Zichterman for compiling this information. The accuracy of this information is good up to the time it was acquired. Unfortunately, things are ever changing so this might not reflect the latest in every state. However, numbers are provided and most of this information is provided on each state's website. Jocelyn took the extra step to confirm, state by state, that what was listed on the website was accurate in practice. I will also note that any one of these states may have exceptions or examples of graduates who work in that state.

In my coverage of Higher Ground by Bob Jones III I sort of glossed over an argument he made, but in preparation of my next segment on Taking Higher Ground he brings up Exodus 23 again so I am going to cover that now.

Inside Higher Ed has a good article recapping the Education Department's opening negotiated rule making session on accreditation back in 2007. And this was specifically geared towards transfer credits.

Transferring credits is a lot easier to pin down then grad school admission because when you ask to transfer a credit they must give a reason for the denial. You get that immediate terse feedback.

I ran across an article from Degreesearch.org about Why Accreditation is so Important. I've mentioned most of this here already, but it bears repeated. You'll note that only the regionally accredited bodies get mentioned specifically. Also notice that no mention is made to the difference between national vs regional accreditation.

I hear this a lot, "You knew what you were getting into, you knew BJU wasn't accredited/nationally accredited and it is your responsibility to figure out what that means." I actually received something similar from the Provost of Bob Jones University and since starting this site have seen it written to a few other people. In theory this is true. After all I was aware that Bob Jones University wasn't accredited when I first enrolled. I was around 18. And I was a capable thinking person. Even now BJU clearly states that they are nationally accredited.

As promised I'm getting back to this document from Harvard about FAQs regarding accreditation. It is important to  understand accreditation itself to understand why it is important, and exactly how National and Regional accreditation differs. It also helps to define the truth about accreditation and what its purpose is.

Inside Higher Ed has some interesting information about 2013 when the government will be looking at renewing the Higher Education Act. It looks like special attention is being placed on accreditation. You can find the info here.
