We carry a list here of all the states that accept TRACS accreditation to certify a teacher. I'm still amazed by how short that list is. One thing you may not know. SC does not necessarily accept TRACS accreditation. I've known this for quite some time. SC has a separate process to approve schools in SC to certify teachers beyond just accreditation.

We've been covering news regarding for-profit institutions as well on this site. Partly because I rules in place for those institutions might be applicable to Bob Jones University as well. The "gainful employment" rules should be major cause for concern to BJU. Luckily the above reproach for-profits seem to be filling in the gap fighting for justice, and now they've found some friends in congress.

Sina Lewis contacted me with the following story.

For a while now the US Department of education has been mulling over regulating for-profit institutions of higher education. Bob Jones University is nothing like for-profit when it comes to the caliber of the education one receives from BJU compared to any for-profit. And BJU isn't a for-profit institution. As much as I've had problems with BJU's education there is a special place reserved in hell for for-profit institutions.

For what it is worth I came across the South Carolina Higher Education Tuition Grants Commission Annual Report. There are some interesting things pertaining to BJU found there.

First the philosophy of SCTGC:

Grad school acceptance or denial is a tricky thing. You never know what they consider and don't, or what the weight of those considerations will be. You don't know what your competition is, and you have no idea how much of the competition they plan on taking. You get little help from the department and then get little feed back. In short it would be a very tricky thing to assess how many graduates from Bob Jones University get denied grad school admission based upon accreditation. Normally you just get a nice letter saying better luck next time.

I've talked about the Day of Reckoning before, but now I'm using it in a slightly different context. This is the Day of Reckoning when you realize that all the hard work you did at a school was for nothing.

This is stuff I say all the time here, but it is always helpful to know we aren't the only ones saying it. I came across this link with some helpful information on how to choose between two colleges that are accredited. First they describe what national accreditation is typically meant for:

This is more of a vocational or trade school accreditation and is used mostly for colleges that teach subjects such as culinary, cosmetology, auto mechanics and other trades.
